🤐 What's happening? Quitter's Day / Month Aftermath

It's been almost a month since Quitter's Day, the notorious second Friday of the new year, which fell on January 12, 2024. This day acknowledges those who set New Year goals but have struggled to achieve them. With January now closed, it is the opportune moment to pick up those goals, reignite your motivation, and persist toward success.

PRIME Prompt: What gets you up in the morning?

🌅 We've all heard the phrase, "What gets you up in the morning?" It's more than just a check about your wake-up time; it's an exploration into what motivates and propels you into the day ahead. For many, the first few moments upon waking set the tone for the entire day. It’s hard to stay motivated and focused. You may feel alone; You may want to connect; You may want to vent a little or a lot.

Let’s delve into the power of mastering your mornings, each morning this week to set the stage for accomplishment.

  • Prioritizing Quality Sleep

Mastering your morning starts from the night before. Prioritizing a good night's sleep is essential for overall health and well-being. By paying attention to your nighttime habits, establishing a consistent sleep schedule, and creating a calming bedtime routine before dozing off, you can better set the stage for a restful night's sleep. This, in turn, contributes to the goal of rising to your rhythm and embracing a morning routine that aligns with you.

  • Rise to Your Rhythm

What gets you up in the morning? what sets the tone that works its way into the intricate motivations shaping your day. The initial moments upon waking have a profound impact on your circadian rhythm - the 24-hour internal clock in your brain that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Whether early birds or night owls, recognizing and understanding your circadian rhythm allows you to schedule your waking hours in alignment with your body's natural tendencies. That morning routine has the potential to supercharge your entire day.

  • Craft a Morning Routine

Your morning routine acts as a behavioral anchor, influencing moods, emotions, thoughts, and actions. The intense morning routines of influential CEOs like JP Morgan’s Jamie Dimon recognize the significance of this, initiating their day with practices to kick the gear on their day. You can road-test these regimes like Ray Smith did (read here) or pick a fit for your lifestyle. What brings you joy, relaxation, or productivity in the mornings? Crafting a routine tailored to your goals establishes your frame for the week ahead with seemingly simple but impactful activities.

  • Mindful Shift

Having a mindful wake-up is a tool for enhancing cognitive flexibility and resilience. It can set a positive tone for the day. This might involve starting the day with gratitude, meditation, or gentle stretching exercises. Mindful practices can help you connect with yourself and build a sense of purpose and presence. Center yourself at the start of the day. There are many mindfulness practices, such as meditation or journaling to choose from and with recommendations to help you along the way. Utilizing apps like Headspace or Calm or simple journaling, as endorsed by successful leaders, induces the brain's ability to change and adapt due to experiences, fostering gratitude, goal-setting, and reflection.

  • Energize with Movement

Exercise can be your catalyst for mental clarity and energy. Even a brief morning workout, whether it's a walk, yoga, or high-intensity training, can trigger the release of feel-good endorphins. This not only enhances mood but also improves cognitive function, and priming performance for the day. Movement is your intention, whether light or intense. Embrace flexibility as life is dynamic, and there may be days when unexpected events or obligations arise.

  • Read to Succeed

The habit of reading, as embraced by successful individuals like Bill Gates, is a popular morning starter. Devoting time to reading each morning enriches my knowledge and sparks creativity by engaging various cognitive processes. This cognitive stimulation contributes to the structural and functional plasticity of the brain. Incorporating this into my morning routine with books aligned with my interests, whether self-help, biography, or poetry, becomes a neurologically strategic choice for cultivating a sharp and creative mind.

🤨 Why is this important for you?

Mastering your mornings goes beyond waking up; it's about creating the groundwork for a day and week of accomplishment and success. Tailor a morning routine that positively influences your mindset and productivity. Let your mornings serve as the canvas on which you paint the path to success for the year ahead.

💭 What's Next?

  1. Reflect and Adjust - Consider making a small change to your current morning routine to enhance your productivity and well-being. Whether it's a brief meditation, a new form of exercise, or dedicating minutes to reading, fill your mornings with actions that resonate with you. 🧘

  2. Reignite Your Goals - If Quitter's Day strikes a chord for you, use this month of February to reignite your New Year's resolutions. Gather the waves of motivation you need plus the persistence needed to carry you through, turning plans and dreams into tangible accomplishments 🏆️

6 Ways to Course Correct Your Resolutions

💡 The frustration is real! Your resolutions are off-target. So many questions but willpower is slipping and course correction is clearly needed. Are those goals still relevant and achievable? Maybe they need tweaking. What’s working? What's not working? Is it just not the right time? Here are 6 tips to help you:

  1.  Reflect on Progress: Take a moment to acknowledge the progress you've made since setting your goals - yes, since January 1. Celebrate any small victories and understand the challenges. It can get better.

  2. Adjust and Prioritize: Check your goals and adjust where necessary. Life is dynamic. Reassess your priorities and realign them with the current situation. Maybe things have changed quickly since the year started. Make sure your well-being is one of those priorities. It underpins everything else.

  3. Break it Down: If your goals seem overwhelming, break them down into smaller, actionable tasks. This makes them more achievable and you feel that you have done more because you have. Focus on a single step at a time and schedule recurring activities to minimize “I’ve forgotten it”. No time-wasting.

  4. Find a Support Team: Share your goals with a friend, family member, or colleague who can provide support and accountability. Surround yourself with others who will keep you on track. I’m sure that you’ve heard it before but "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."

  5. Be Flexible: Understand that goals may need adjustments, and slip-ups can occur. That's okay. Pace yourself. The ability to adapt to changing circumstances is your superpower.

  6. Keep Inspired: Engage yourself with quotes, affirmations, stories, and news that inspire you to meet your goals. Continue to learn and make seeking inspiration your passion. Track your progress. What gets measured, gets done.
